Acwa Power
ACWA Power entered the Uzbekistan market in 2019, marking the start of a strategic partnership that aligns with the country’s ambitious renewable energy targets. Uzbekistan aims to generate 40% of its electricity from renewable sources by 2030, and ACWA Power has quickly become a cornerstone of this transformation. Within a few years, the company has signed multiple agreements with the Government of Uzbekistan to develop solar, wind, and green hydrogen projects across the country.
Among its flagship projects is the Sirdarya Combined Cycle Gas Turbine (CCGT) plant, a high-efficiency 1,500 MW facility that will provide cost-effective and cleaner electricity to millions of Uzbek households. In the renewable energy sector, ACWA Power is developing the Bash Wind Farm (1,500 MW) in Bukhara Region—one of the largest onshore wind projects in Central Asia. The company is also advancing a 100 MW wind farm in Nukus and several utility-scale solar plants in Samarkand and Tashkent regions. Together, these projects represent over USD 7 billion in planned investments and will supply over 8 GW of clean energy capacity, enough to power millions of homes and significantly reduce annual carbon emissions.
Uzbekistan serves not only as a market but also as a regional development base for ACWA Power. The company’s Tashkent office coordinates engineering, procurement, and construction activities and manages a growing network of local contractors and suppliers. Each new project creates jobs in construction, operations, and maintenance, while providing training programs that transfer advanced technical skills to the Uzbek workforce.
In 2023, ACWA Power took a groundbreaking step by signing agreements to develop Central Asia’s first green hydrogen project in Uzbekistan. This initiative, supported by international financiers such as the International Finance Corporation (IFC), will produce up to 3,000 tonnes of green hydrogen per year, paving the way for the country to export clean fuels and build a hydrogen economy.
With its deep commitment to sustainability, ACWA Power also engages in community development and social responsibility programs. The company supports local education and vocational training, helping prepare a new generation of engineers and energy specialists. Through these activities, ACWA Power strengthens its long-term partnership with Uzbekistan and contributes to the country’s broader economic and environmental goals.
Today, ACWA Power stands as one of the largest foreign investors in Uzbekistan’s energy sector. Its projects will help the nation diversify its energy mix, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and ensure reliable electricity for a growing population. Guided by innovation and a shared vision for a greener future, ACWA Power and Uzbekistan are shaping a new era of sustainable energy in Central Asia.
